PDP allows Ayu, Oyinlola, Ciroma and 24 others to participate in NWC elections (FULL LIST)

Former Senate Speaker Iyorchia Ayu, Former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Former Oyo State Deputy Governor Taofeek Arapaja have been authorized by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to contest the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) elections at the next national convention.

A former minister of women’s affairs, Maryam Ciroma, and two former senators, Samuel Ayanwu and Ighoyota Amori, are also cleared.

They are among 27 wannabes cleared by the party’s zoning committee on Wednesday.

This is contained in the report of the selection committee submitted Thursday to the organizing committee of the national convention of the party led by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

The Committee was chaired by a former Federation Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, with a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara, as his deputy.

The main opposition party’s national elective convention is being held in Abuja on October 30 and 31.

In the seven-page report, the committee, which was inaugurated on September 23, said it selected 32 candidates after two of them withdrew from the race and then cleared 27.

He also said he disqualified four others.

The report, obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, listed Mr. Ayu as the only candidate for the post of national president.

The former Senate speaker, from Benue state in the north-central area, was recently adopted by the party’s northern leadership as the region’s consensus candidate for the post.

The report states that Mr. Oyinlola, former national secretary of the PDP, and Mr. Arapaja are both vying for the post of national vice-president (South). They are from the South West area.

He also indicated that Ms. Ciroma, who was once the party’s female leader, is running for the post of National Vice President (North). She has to fight with Umar Damagun, a former ambassador, at the convention.

Mr Anyanwu, who represented Imo East in the Senate until 2015, was recently adopted by the party’s southeast section as the consensus candidate for the post.

He is the only candidate for the post of national secretary following the withdrawal of one of his challengers and the disqualification of another.

The report mentioned Mr. Ighoyota as the only contender for the post of deputy national secretary of the organization.

Mr Maduabum, who is currently the CEO of the PDP Governors Forum (PDP-GF), was running for the post of national secretary while Ms Tasallah was vying for the post of deputy national leader for women.

The committee also said it disqualified four contenders for various reasons.

They are a former national secretary of the PDP, Wale Oladipo, a former national vice-president of the party in the Southwest, Eddy Olafeso, Oke Muo-Aroh and Akintan Oludaisi.

Mr. Oladipo was the national secretary of the PDP under the presidency of Bamanga Tukur while Mr. Olafeso was the national vice-president of the party.

NWC positions to compete for

The 27 authorized aspirants will compete for 21 NWC positions at the convention.

Positions are National President, National Vice President (North), Deputy National President (South), National Secretary, Deputy National Secretary, National Treasurer, Deputy National Treasurer, National Financial Secretary, Financial Secretary deputy national, the national organizing secretary and the deputy national secretary. The committee said it was guided in its mission by a number of documents and the eligibility of candidates.
