KATHMANDU: The newly elected deputies of the National Assembly (NA) were sworn in today.

NA President Ganesh Prasad Timalsina swore them an oath of office and secrecy during a ceremony held at the Federal Parliament Secretariat in Singha Durbar at 11am.

Nineteen members were elected as NA members in the January 26 National Assembly elections.

Out of 19 NA legislators, NC has six members, CPN (Maoist Center) and CPN (Unified Socialist) have five each, while CPN-UML, Janata Samajwadi Party and Rastriya Janamorcha have one each.

A legislator was appointed on the recommendation of the President in accordance with the provision.

The National Assembly is the permanent Upper House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament. One-third of the NA’s 59 legislators’ terms expire every two years, and the same number of new legislators are elected to fill vacancies.

At first, the terms of NA legislators were determined by lot. According to the provision, the term of an NA legislator is six years.
