N.Biren Singh is sworn in as a member of the 12th Legislative Assembly of Manipur at the Assembly Hall of Imphal.
Senior BJP MP Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh was sworn in as interim Manipur Assembly Speaker on Sunday and will swear the oath of office and secrecy to the remaining 59 newly elected MPs on Monday.
In a simple ceremony at the Darbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan, Governor La Ganesan swore in Singh who in recent elections was elected to the Lamsang assembly seat, defeating National People’s Party candidate Pukhrambam Sumati Devi by a margin of 400 votes.
Acting Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, newly elected MPs Biswajit Singh, Y. Khemchand Singh and Govindas Konthoujam, Chief Secretary Rajesh Kumar, Director General of Police P. Doungel and other senior officials attended at the ceremony.
The term of the outgoing Assembly is due to expire on March 19.
Biren Singh resigned from his post on Friday and the governor has asked him to continue in office until the new government takes over. There is no confirmation yet as to when the next chief minister will be chosen, or when the new BJP-led government will take office. Ahead of the election, the BJP had unofficially declared that Singh would be the main ministerial face of the party and lead the next government.
