The state government has overturned the appointment of lawyer Pravin Chavan as special prosecutor in a corruption case against former MP Ramesh Kadam, a special court heard on Friday.

In March, Devendra Fadnavis, then Leader of the Opposition and now Deputy Chief Minister, presented video recordings to the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly alleging that a few people, including Chavan and members of the government of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), could be heard conspiring “to entrap BJP leaders”. .

The court that the state government overruled Chavan’s nomination and appointed him in his place. He also recorded the notification of his nomination issued by the state government dated July 21.

According to court records, Chavan had been named in the case since 2016 and last appeared at a hearing earlier this month on July 8. The case relates to an FIR filed by Dahisar Police in 2015, which was later transferred to the CID, to investigate the allegations, including charges of cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy and relevant sections of the law on preventing corruption against Kadam and others for allegedly embezzling funds from Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Magasvargiya Vikas Mahamandal.

On March 8, Fadnavis submitted video recordings which he said were 125 hours long and alleged they contained evidence of a plot by MVA leaders to accuse BJP leaders of bogus business in the state. . Chavan had called the allegations against him baseless.

Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil then informed the assembly in March that an investigation would be carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the allegations raised by Fadnavis.

The change in government has also led to changes in other appointments, including special prosecutor Pradip Gharat last week who was removed from the case against BJP member Mohit Kamboj linked to alleged bank fraud.
