Avoiding a confrontation with Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and legal entanglements, the government of Maha Vikas Aghadi decided to postpone the election for the post of Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra.

The MVA planned to hold the elections on Tuesday, the last day of the winter session, but they decided to suspend them.

Elections for the Speaker of the Lower House would now be taken in the budget session of the Maharashtra legislature.

According to available information, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray spoke to NCP founding chairman Sharad Pawar, the chief architect of MVA, and took a final call.

Thackeray and Pawar had also spoken to General Counsel Ashutosh Kumbhkoni.

Senior leaders of MVA – Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress also met at the Vidhan Bhavan complex.

The MVA had previously sent a letter to the governor concerning the amendment of the legislative rules concerning the holding of the election of the president by voice vote instead of a secret ballot.

Koshyari, however, did not allow it.
