Bhagat Singh’s nephew on Chandigarh airport renaming

The Punjab government was in talks with Haryana and requested to rename the airport.

Professor Jagmohan Singh, nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, on Sunday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement to name Chandigarh airport after the great martyr and called it a people’s victory.

In the 93rd episode of his monthly Mann ki Baat address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that Chandigarh airport will henceforth be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh in tribute to the great freedom fighter.

“We welcome the decision to honor the great freedom fighter, but I think it was the long overdue decision as the issue was raised in 2006 and a resolution was presented at the session of the Assembly of Punjab on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, demanding that Chandigarh airport be named after him.But the government of Haryana started suggesting names of its own people and at this time- there, a central minister said the airport would not be named after any particular person and would only be named after a city,” Prof Singh said.

Prof. Singh further said that later, under pressure from the people of the state, the government of Haryana passed a resolution in the state legislature in 2010 to name the airport in Chandigarh after Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

He said there is also a need for the said airport not to be handed over to any company which would go against Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s thinking.

“However, photographs of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev should be displayed inside the airport because Vidyavati ji, Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s mother, thought her son did not like to be left alone, he should be allowed to stay with his companions. Likewise, it has been officially accepted by the Prime Minister that Shaheed Bhagat Singh is the greatest martyr of the country and now Chandigarh airport will also be named after him,” he added.

During his monthly address, Prime Minister Modi said, “As a tribute to the great freedom fighter, it has been decided that Chandigarh airport will henceforth be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh.”

The renaming of the airport is seen as a victory for the efforts of the Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab.

The AAP said that the continued efforts of the Punjab government have been successful.

Mr Mann tweeted: “We welcome the decision to name Chandigarh Airport after Shaheed Bhagat Singh Ji on behalf of all of Punjab… Thank you very much Prime Minister @narendramodi Ji… a big demand of the Punjabis long over”. .

The Punjab government was in talks with Haryana last month and requested that Chandigarh airport be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

The AAP government further claimed that the previous state government was unable to secure consent and change the name of the airport and thanked the Prime Minister for accepting the government’s decision Mann.
