Assam’s first female finance minister Ajanta Neog to table budget on July 16


Assam’s first female finance minister Ajanta Neog will table the state budget for 2020-2021 on July 16.

Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will present the state budget for 2021-2022 to the Assam Legislature on July 16.

Ajanta Neog, the first female finance minister of the northeastern state, was awarded the finance portfolio by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 11.

She was elected to the State Assembly in the Golaghat Assembly constituency.

Besides the finance department, she is also the holder of the social protection department.

Ajanta Neog left the Congress Party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in December 2020. She was married to former Congress leader Nagen Neog, who was killed along with eight others by the United Liberation Front. Asom (ULFA) in 1996..

Ajanta entered the assembly for the first time after the 2001 elections, defeating her opponent, Bitupan Saikia in Congress, by 9,325 votes. She has been elected to the Assembly in Golaghat constituency five consecutive times.

The Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Assam, Dr Numal Momin, said: “This will be the first full budget in the second term of the government led by BJP in Assam and Ajanta Neog, which is the first female state finance minister will table the state budget.
