WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–July 21, 2022–
AIDS Health Foundation ( AHF ) today slammed the most greedy and profitable industry trade association on the planet for hypocritically calling for so-called ‘drug pricing fairness’ in a full page ad on the 340B drug pricing program that was published earlier this week in the Washington Post.

AHF says PhRMA’s announcement is a cynical misrepresentation of the 340B program (Photo: Business Wire)
The cynical ad was placed by Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) with a headline that read: “340B helps patients, large hospitals and pharmacy chains. Does this seem fair to patients? » The words were printed in white text on a light green background; however, the first use of the word “patients” was in a faint halftone of the same green background color, while the word “BIG” was in white in a much larger point size, diminishing and/or exaggerating their presence in the ad and, by extension, suggesting what AHF claims is PhRMA’s misleading assessment of 340B’s “fairness.”
“PhRMA calling for fair drug pricing is like the tobacco industry promoting lung health,” said AHF President Michael Weinstein. “ PhRMA broke spending records for lobbyists and political contributions. We see what they are doing. “Distract and deny” is one of the oldest political tricks in the book. Pharmaceutical CEOs have paid for this hypocritical slander in the Post ad just as US congressmen are considering giving Medicare modest authority to negotiate drug prices for a handful of drugs. I It’s a desperate move, attacking frontline nonprofit hospitals and clinics that use 340B savings to provide services to rural Americans and many vulnerable populations.
The irony is that the pharmaceutical industry supported the expansion of the 340B program so that it could gain access to the growing market for Medicaid drugs. Since 2010, pharmaceutical company sales to Medicaid have increased 119% to $79 billion. Total pharmaceutical company sales in 2020 were $515 billion and global pharmaceutical company sales were $1.27 trillion.
“The 340B program is an essential resource for the health safety net in the United States. Savings from the program allow nonprofits and health care providers to stretch federal resources to care for more sick people. It costs taxpayers nothing. Pharmaceutical CEOs want to strangle it. Congress should leave him alone… ‘Leave 340Be!'” added John Hassel, national advocacy director for AHF.
