Biplab Kumar Deb resigned as Chief Minister of Tripura on Saturday

Agartal: In a surprise move, Biplab Kumar Deb resigned as Chief Minister of Tripura on Saturday. He tendered his resignation to Governor Tripura, Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav and BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde are in Tripura as central observers.

Speaking to the media, Bhupender Yadav said under Deb’s leadership there has been a lot of development in the state over the past 4 years. Today, he said, Deb tendered her resignation to the governor. The senior leader said a legislative party meeting will be held at 8 p.m. and a new leader will be elected to replace Deb, whose departure comes just under a year before the assembly elections.

Favorites list for Tripura CM

So far, three names have popped up for the post of chief minister in Tripura. They are Pratima Bhoumik, Jishnu Dev Varma and Manik Saha. While these names are circulating, one cannot be sure until the official announcement as the BJP is known for its surprises.

A Lok Sabha MP from Tripura West, Bhowmik is currently Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment in the Centre. She has been with the BJP since 1991. Before becoming an MP, she contested assembly elections against former chief minister Manik Sarkar in 1998 and 2018. But she lost the polls both times.

Jishnu Dev Varma

Jishnu Dev Varma was deputy of Biplab Kumar Deb. He was elected in Charilam constituency in a by-election with a margin of over 25,000 votes. He obtained 89% of the votes against Palash Debbarma, his competitor from the CPIM, who obtained 3.46% of the votes.

Manik Saha

Manik Saha is currently the leader of the Tripura BJP. Last month, he was elected to Rajya Sabha, becoming the first BJP MP in Tripura’s Upper House.

After resigning, Biplab Deb said he should work in the organization to form the BJP government in Tripura. “To strengthen the base of the BJP in the state, I have to work at the grassroots level in various sectors. I should work as a common Karyakarta (party worker) rather than being in the position of CM to train the BJP government in the coming assembly elections, he said.
